first contact and falling in love

plan was, to help the owner of feeling free to clear the boat, have a couple of good days and just to have a look... well you can't help love...

let the journey begin 7/8.9.22

The announcement of ÖBB a week ago, that i have to begin my journey in a seat iso a couchette on the car-nighttrain did not materialise in the end, I even got upgraded to a sleeper coach. Seeing all the motorbikes going on the car train, awoke some sweet but very old memories. But taking the bike was not an option, as my old VW Polo was totally packed with kite stuff, blankets and luggage from some crews i am expecting over the next 3 weeks.

So after 14hrs I arrived in Livorno, putting the car to a secured parking and boarding another train going for a daytrip to Pisa.

...so is Livorno, very picturesque drive along Viale Italiana with the old marine-officer's villas.

My little blue smurf hasn't seen the sea before.

Now queueing for the ferry to Olbia, really looking forward to having a shower and a beer.

Salute Bernhard

Day 3 on the island, and there is so much to tell..but besides the rusted beercan in the bilge (lowest part of the boat below the floor) that grew over with mold over the last 2 month, nothing really exciting. To set-up a boat in 48 hrs is a task that you can't possibly fulfill. So it was all cleaning, stowing and more cleaning. The nights were nice and quiet, or I just slept as a rock, so tired.

I picked up Paul(NL)and Dick aka the old owner of S/Y Feeling Free, now S/Y Feeling LOST, some more cleaning and Dick showing me what it means to operate a boat for 20 yrs.

Provisioning is so much better than on a rental boat, where you have to think about what you will use in the next 7 days... and the old lady has storage like a big boat. Dick has been pronounced dead already, so many old friends were happily surprised, when he showed up in person.

Quick swim, nice dinner, like the days before,  temperature in the low 30s.

So, tomorrow morning we will start our journey with a first stretch to Arbatax, about 40nm south of our position in La Caletta. winds don't look promising, but tomorrow we have a chance of some in the back at least.

More to tell soon...

ci vediamo ragazzi... a dopo

sept 12th

back to square one...

...how much energy and time Fred, Harry and I have spent in May to get Feeling LOST (FL for future reference) from the wharf in Arbatax to the marina in LaCaletta (di Siniscola), just to sail it down to Arbatax again on day 4 of this journey, the first day at sea. and again 9 hrs on the engine.. 5-9kts of wind are just enough to get the sails up and down and up again and so on. but not to quit the engine...

oh, that we have done after 10 min already, i was so fixated on having the seacock for the cooling open, that i forgot about the fuel-valve... but, D. knew excactly how to get the engine going again, opened the 4 injector chambers, let the air out and in 20 min we were going again... what a start.. i will never forget to open it again, wonder what i will forget instead.

Finally we anchored in Porto Frailis, finally i see the beach from the other side after March and May. Quick check on the anchor and cleaning the log-wheel from sea-creatures ended with a jelly-sting, don't know if it was kinda payback... anyway... quick canned dinner with some red wine from the wellstuffed winecellar of FL. Now to bed.. sleep!? not as long as the disco on the beach is sendig their beats..

Tomorrow!? heading south, what else...

Yesterday, 13.09. we left Porto Frailis, S of Arbatax, after having a coffee and a swim, LOSTcrew-style, in direction south heading for Porto Coralis. As we had about 8kn of wind against, it was no other option than to stress the engine again. Looks like the sails are only optional. But after 2hours we decided to change plans, get the sails out, as the wind has increased to 12-14 knots and has turned a to southeast. Ofcourse that means to take a left by 90 degrees, then 230° to tack against the wind, but the 3 hours sailing were splendid.

sept 14th      -     15 hours swell

Around 15:00 we dropped anchor in a nice bay just south of Capo Sferracavallo,  sandy beaches, crystal-blue waters. After a swim we decided not to stay, as the swell was too much and to continue 2hrs on the engine to the marina in Porto Corallo. BUT....then the lever of the anchor got stuck on deck and wasn't moving anymore, so we couldn't lift the anchor. We had to saw off a good 20cm of the lever to get it off. By that time it was too late to continue, so we stayed for the night.

What was stamping at first, turned into rolling for the rest of the night, cause wind has turned by 60° so the swell came right abeam. not pleasant at all. I know you can turn the boat with a sternachor, but it was all too much work being tired already. So we sucked it up.

This morning we hurried to get outta here, heading south again. Beautiful coast, Wind 8kn against.... a bit of a déjà vu... we'll see

keep you posted...

Not drown yet...

September 17, 2022

I have hoped to write this blog more regularly, but it was quite exhausting.

On Wednesday we made it into Porto Villaputzu in the early afternoon, unfortunately a lot of engine was necessary. FL is quite okay on the tack, but if you need to make some distance (which was my main mistake) you can't go of course 60° just to make a bit of sailing.

First conclusion, trips in the area would have been better, but okay, the learning curve is steep indeed.

Anyway, as we needed some bread for the next days P&I had a sweaty walk into the city of Villaputzu, nice beach along, but the city itself seems to be a retirement- & vacationhome-assembly. Google knows nothing about openingtimes, so we made some extra kilometers, but with a little refreshment here and there it was doable.

very nice dinner in the restaurant opposite the marina, I've been here with Barbara in June on our way with the rentalcar to Arbatax (where the boat is on dock for the winter).

Thursday brought us finally some northely winds, first 8-10 knots, which we couldn't use for sailing as they were from dead behind and the swell from the days before where exactly 40° from port with waves up to 2 meters... well the wind had his time to plaz with the water the days before.

When the wind increased above 15 knots I decided to lift the sails and give it a go for a couple of hours at least. It worked well on one side, but not on the other. So some more enginehours collected.

We anchored in the very nice bay of Villasimius just west of Cape Carbonaras.

Quite a thunderstorm in the night made things intresting again, but with 50m chain out, there was no problem, still, quite sleepless. But the distant lightning set a beautiful scenery.

Fridaymorning brought a quick rainshower and we used the light winds to go to our destination Cagliari. Forecast showed 5-6bft (17-25kts) (×2-10%=km/h) on the nose for today (Saturday) which we actually have right now.

Marina del Sole is well protected behind a labyrinth of wavebreakers, but it's a shitplace like rarely seen before.  but OK, i will stay only 3 nights🙄

Today we turned the boat around (mainly cleaning) and P& I made an extensive trip to the city of Cagliary which absolutely has its nice spots. Quute some tourist-masses, no wonder, there's a big cruiseship spitting out it's passengers almost every day.
